Letter: More tax ... but more cuts, speed cameras

Council tax has risen by 20%.
Council tax has risen by 20%.

Since moving to Scarborough in 2015 my council tax bill has risen by £240 or over 20%.

This has coincided with a massive reduction in services, implemented by a Conservative government, county council and borough council.

Libraries and youth services have almost disappeared, unless volunteers are found.

Job losses and closures of fire and police stations has meant that coverage of rural areas is almost non-existent.

The highways and footpaths are in a shocking state and public transport is under threat of further cuts in rural areas. If you have a garden waste bin a charge is imposed, even though higher rated properties have already paid for this!

The Police Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan has again increased the budget by 5% to get more “visible policing”. However, the time that the police are seen in villages is either holding a speed gun or arriving to outnumber a few peaceful protestors at Kirkby Misperton!

Wonder what the cost of that operation over two years is?

People are willing to pay for services such as social care, as North Yorkshire has one of the biggest ageing populations. However, we have been conned by an austerity agenda that is a political choice by a party that claims to be for low taxation.
