It is of course very easy to blame the Government for granting licences to frack for gas to ensure the lights are kept on and the wheels of industry keep turning.
The Government can certainly be blamed for succumbing to pressures put on them by the Green Party and the Friends of the Earth by appointing Liberal Democrat’s Ed Davy as Energy Minister in the last Coalition Government. He too had the delusion that the untested wind turbines and solar panels can supply a base load to maintain the National Grid which of course they can never do.
Also while cosying up to the German Greens it was thought a good idea to close a number of coal fired power stations that are the mainstay in supplying Great Britain’s base load.
Ed Davy pressed ahead with wind turbines despite protests by more knowledgeable MPs for example Owen Patterson who was tasked to write a report about the efficiency of wind power. After he wrote this report Ed Davy stamped his feet and had it suppressed, and it still hasn’t seen the light of day.
Gas powered generating stations are now urgently required to fill the gap. After the boom years of North Sea oil and gas we are now running short of both. It has just been announced by the Government their intention to re-open a Yorkshire coal-fired power station because of the dire situation we are in.
We are still in a perilous state regarding future electricity supplies and the only available answer is new nuclear power. In my opinion we should be put on a war footing to build them instead of the vanity projects like HS2 that only consumes wealth instead of nuclear that will create it.
Once you understand the factor of one million which means that one ton of uranium creates as much power as one million tons of coal you understand it has no competition.
Coal is the most polluting of fossil fuels. Nuclear has been proved to be the safest source of electricity available that is completely green.
