A NEW under-sevens junior football team is thriving at Filey Town and is looking forward to a bright future.
The new Filey Town Juniors under-sevens team lost out 2-1 to a very strong Brid Rangers team at Clarence Drive on Tuesday night, with a crowd of around 200 watching the action, while they claimed a 3-0 win and a 0-0 draw against Flamborough at home on Thursday night. Boss Craig Robson has been delighted by his young squad, which is often split into an A team and a B team to give everybody a fair chance.
“Most of our players are five or six years old and all of them are under seven. They will be eligible for their debut in the Scarborough & District Minor League next season, hopefully there will be enough teams to form a league next season.
“The team played brilliantly on Tuesday against a very strong Brid team with several seven-year-olds in. Rangers are a very established club and to only lose out 2-1 was a great achievement.
“There was also a great atmosphere with so many parents, grandparents and fans there watching the game at Clarence Drive.”
Robson added: “To get our first win on Thursday against Flamborough was superb, although there were less fans this time, around a 100 still came along to cheer them on.
“The 20 players that I have got range in age from four years old to six and they all have a great time training and playing matches.
“They have trained in all weather this year, in the rain, wind and mud, they don’t mind what the conditions are like as they love playing football.”
