Scarborough Ladies under-11s moved into the next round of the City of York Girls League Cup with a hard -fought 1-0 win against Copmanthorpe.

In a game very similar to the recent league encounter these two very evenly-matched sides played some excellent football throughout.

Hosts Scarborough had the better of the attacks but Copmanthorpe defended resolutely to keep Boro at bay and when the visitors did press forward Karys Dickinson and Daisy Willis stood firm.

With 12 girls present the substitutions came thick and fast and it was the introduction of Olivia Shehi and Jolie Matthews which proved to be the pivotal moment for the hosts.

Ella Davis carried the ball wide and Emma Willis helped the cross on to Shehi, whose powerful shot beat the visiting goalkeeper at her near post but cannoned off the upright and then rolled across the goal line. Luckily Matthews was on hand to poke the ball into the net for her second goal in two games.

The second half was end-to-end stuff with Poppy Simpson, Ellie Speak and Amie Hyde all having good chances and top-scorer Davis having numerous shots deflected wide by a resolute visiting defence.

The biggest danger came when Dickinson upended a visiting attacker and the resulting free-kick, blasted on target, was brilliantly headed away by Davis.

With the game still in the balance the Boro girls retained possession with Nellie Davison, Alex Metcalfe and debutante Beth Metcalfe all keeping the ball well.

The girls are now looking forward the quarter-final draw, along with all other Scarborough Ladies FC teams who received first round byes.
