Tributes have been pouring in for former Scarborough FC tannoy man Dave Metcalfe, who has sadly died.

Dave passed away in St Catherine’s Hospice at the age of 71 after a battle with illness.

He will be fondly remembered for his announcements at the McCain Stadium and his contributions to the club.

Dave, who leaves wife Brenda and son Paul, campaigned long and hard to get his beloved club some air-time on Sky TV and he also worked tirelessly behind the scenes on a voluntary basis.

Former Scarborough FC supporters club chairman Stuart Canvin said: “When you think about Scarborough FC you think about a lot of things - one of those things is always Dave.

“He was a huge driving force behind the supporters club and at times he kept me going.

“Once he got hold of a task he was so focused and he wouldn’t let it go.

“He is better known for his announcments though, he loved a catchphrase.

“A lot of people were unsure about his style, but he certainly brought plenty of character to the role.

“Some of his pronunciations were brilliant. One highlight for me was the battle he had with the pronunciation of Toby Oshitola.”

Scarborough FC stalwart Mitch Cook added: “It is very sad news, he was one of the characters of those days.

“On the tannoy he made some memorable gaffes. That was funny, but then the joke he made about it after was even funnier.

“Dave was one of the volunteers the old club couldn’t have done without, he didn’t get paid for anything he did.

“He worked so hard and whatever he did had humour in it.”

Fans and people associated with Scarborough FC have also remembered Dave on Twitter.

Stuart Welsh: “Let’s make some noise for the Boro boys RIP Dave Metcalf.”

Darren Foreman: “Rest in peace Dave lovely man.”

Wayne Gardiner: “‘Towney Ackwurf’. RIP.”
