A TRIO of former Scarborough FC players were unlucky not to book their place in the Grand Final of the Masters at the weekend.

Craig Short, David Holdsworth and Steve Charles all turned out for Sheffield United in the event that took place at the city’s Motorpoint Arena.

All three played a hefty part in pushing the Blades through to the final of the Yorkshire Masters where they met Leeds United.

Holdsworth netted a couple in United’s Group A opening win by a 3-2 scoreline against Doncaster, before Short and Charles scored in the next game, which was a 5-3 success against derby rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

In the final, Short and Charles were both on target, but four from Darren Huckerby and one from Jamie Forrester booked Leeds’ path through to the Grand Final.

Huckerby went on to grab the golden boot with his eight goals and he also won the player of the tournament honour.

More action follows this weekend, when the Midland Masters takes place on Saturday in Birmingham.

There will be one ex-Seasider taking to the blue pitch, as Kyle Lighbourne will be pulling on the colours of Walsall.

He will be aiming to lead his side past Birmingham, Aston Villa, West Brom, Wolves and Coventry.

Other former Scarborough FC men to turn out in the following weeks are Tommy Mooney for Watford and Shaun Murray for Notts County.

The Grand Final of the competition takes place at Wembley on Sunday September 4.
