Despite not being available for the final Yorkshire Order of Merit event, due to playing in the England Golf Champion of Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa, Malton & Norton GC’s Chris Halley managed to win the Merit title by 172 points.
Halley has won six of the seven events he has entered in the Order of Merit which is a record for the event.
He also managed to finish second to England Boys International Bobby Keeble at the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa.
But it was a missed opportunity for Halley, who was in majestic form during the morning when he led with a superb five-under-par 68, but a poor second round from the Malton club’s hot-shot allowed Keeble to claim the honours.
The morning round included eagles on three of the par fives along with three birdies.
But he slipped to a second-round 79 for 147 then had to wait to see if he would be caught.
“I missed short putts on the opening three holes then bogeyed four and five,” he lamented.
“I didn’t hit it anywhere near as good as I had in the morning,” added the joiner from Whitby.
