NORTH CLIFF BC’s Derrick Swift is the new Scarborough and District’s summer Champion of Champions.
He was one of the players who had qualified for the grand finals by successes in local singles merit and over-60s merit competitions throughout the summer.
Three of the 18 qualifiers were unable to attend.
Played at the Alexandra Gardens greens, on Saturday, and organised by Whitby’s Geoff Watson, the plays-offs were blessed with excellent weather.
In the quarter-finals Whitby’s Kevin Gates beat Hunmanby’s Phil Todd 21-12, Dave Lowe (Dukes Park) beat clubmate Ron Marshall 21-12, Swift beat Danny Cooper (North Cliff) 21-15 and Whitby’s Alan Landers beat Hunmanby’s Geoff Heaton 21-10.
The semi-finals saw Gates, who won the event in 2005, beat Lowe, the 2010 winner, 21-18 while Swift, champion in 2008, beat Landers, the reigning winter champion, 21-19.
The final started with Swift scoring two at the first end only to go behind 3-2 at the third end. With both players in top form, Gates then kept his nose in front 8-6 after 10 ends and 11-10 after 15 ends until Swift drew level 15-15 after 20 ends.
Swift then took control and won five of the next six ends to emerge 21-16 winner.
