DUKES PARK BC’s Andy Deighton, four times winner of the Scarborough and District Crown Green Bowling Association‘s Boyes Cup, turned in another powerful performance at Hunmanby on Sunday to record yet another success.
Four players from each of the nine clubs in membership of the association had qualified to take part in the finals play-off, which was sponsored by Tim Boyes, of Boyes Stores, and organised by association competitions secretary Jackie Stapleton.
Early rounds saw the 36 entries reduced to the quarter-finals stage where Deighton beat Eastfield’s Mick Dawson 21-9, Pat Germaine (North Cliff) beat Les Boyles (Westgate) 21-16, Geoff Watson (Whitby) beat Borough’s Terry Summersgill 21-17 and Phil Todd (Hunmanby) beat clubmate Keith Gardam 21-10.
In the semis Deighton beat Germaine 21-4 while Watson beat Todd 21-12.
Glorious sunshine lasted throughout the eight-hour-plus competition and this encouraged more than 80 players and supporters to stay and witness an exciting final.
Watson, who won the Boyes Cup in 1997, proved to be a worthy opponent and after being 9-3 in arrears after 10 ends managed to reduce the deficit to 20-18 after 30 ends.
With both players having displayed exceptional accuracy it was still anybody’s game, but Deighton kept his nerve and gained his fifth Boyes success with a 21-18 result.
Association president Robert Child, who presented the prizes, thanked the sponsors, organiser, and Hunmanby members for hosting the event.
