The Scarborough and District Winter Alliance held their third meeting of the season at North Cliff Golf Club on Saturday in a busy week for the club.
Nevertheless, the course was again in tip top condition for the time of year and a credit to the greenkeepers.
The forecast showers did not materialise but there was a bitterly cold easterly wind that made it tough going for many of the players.
Each club fielded seven pairs, the best four cards to count to the league standings.
North Cliff pair Fraser Kelley (0) and Ade Owenson (17) were first off and immediately set about inspiring the rest of their team and they succeeded in some style when the posted a score of net 60 or 12-under- par that was unsurpassed on the day and so won the Tankards.
Kelley played very well, as expected, however on this occasion he was put in the shade by his partner the in-form Owenson who notched up 12 of the scores on their card to continue his impressive run of recent success.
They were backed up strongly by the rest of the pairs in their team, especially the three who handed in scores of net 64, Steve Bennett and Pete Kirby, Paul Draycott and John Titley and James Blenkinsopp and Adam Morris, to make a team total of 252.
That total was good enough to see North Cliff shoot to the top of the league table, albeit only leading by a one shot from neighbours South Cliff the current Pennant holders.
Whitby’s A Wiggins (0) and C Pennock (10) finished second with an excellent 10-under-par 62 to just edge the Filey pair of D Bulman (17) and L Gray (12) on net 63 into third place, they in turn beat N Bruce (8) and A Wood (11) of South Cliff with a better back nine.
There were several pairs who finished on net 64, but apart from Bennett and Kirby, only two more made it onto the prize list, both from Filey, L Franks (4) and D Barnes (6) and A Lyth (6) and K Keenan (6).
No doubt the clubs will be looking at their best combinations to see if they can produce some fireworks on November 5 at Bridlington Belvedere.
Rabbits glory for North duo Trenham and Owenson
The Flamborough & District Rabbit Golf Alliance meeting at South Cliff saw the North Cliff pairing of Dave Trenham and Ade Owenson take the honours in the fourball betterball competition with a score of net 61.
They handed in a very tidy card which included birdies at the first for Owenson and the fourth for Trenham.
Their two nearest challengers were Dave Walker and Guy Larkin from Brid Links and Les Towse and Phil Thompson of Malton & Norton, when both pairs finished on net 63.
The league standings show South Cliff leading the way on a total of 387 with Kirkbymoorside close on their heels at 390, Brid Links and Malton & Norton are both on 392 with North Cliff a further shot back on 393.
The Alliance competition for the Lisa Jane Trophy took place at Whitby where the South Cliff pairing of D Woodward-Hay and H Roberts put together a fine round of golf to post a total of 47 points to take first place in the pairs.
Hessle pair snap up East Riding victory
The East Riding and District of York Winter Alliance held the third event of their season at North Cliff.
Each team fielded two nominated pairs in the better ball competition with both scores to count towards the league standings.
Pairings from both North Cliff and South Cliff led off at 8am, and Dave Hall (7) and Alan Baldwin (12) from the latter club set a very good early target of net 66 that stood for some time.
However, it was eventually beaten by an excellent round from Andy Lockwood (1) and Andy Greetham (4) of Hessle when they posted a net 64 to claim the Tankards.
The North Cliff pairings of Fraser Kelley (0) and Alan Richardson (10) and Paul Draycott (5) and John Titley (12) both managed to post net 67s, as did South Cliff’s second pair Peter Braithwaite (11) and Nigel Middleton (9), but both clubs will need to improve if they are to challenge for the Hull Daily Mail Trophy.
