Waites cruises into last eight

Scott Waites is an even money favourite to win the BDO World Darts Championship after powering through to the quarter finals last night.

The Outlane carpenter, the highest seed left in the competition at the Lakeside, Frimley Green, beat Geert de Vos 4-1 to earn a meeting with fellow Englishman Paul Jennings on Friday.

Waites beat the Belgian easily enough but may need to brush up on his finishing if he is to take the title.

He raced through the opening set yesterday but missed doubles in the second and de Vos levelled the contest.

A 121 checkout gave Waites a 2-1 lead and then a superb 148 checkout, his best of the tournament so far, won him the fourth set after he had trailed two legs to one.

There was no way back for de Vos from there, Waites winning the opening two legs of the fifth set on the way to sealing a fourth quarter-final appearance at Lakeside
