Struggling Sewerby 3rds have admitted defeat and resigned from the Derwent Valley Cricket League.

They had battled their way through to the halfway point of the season, but after having to forfeit their last two fixtures because they were unable to raise a team, they withdrew from the league yesterday.

Sewerby had been up against it all season, losing all their matches and regularly being bowled out for scores of under 50.

Their best display came when they loaned five players from Muston for the day, but even that couldn’t lift them to their first win of the season.

They were bottom of Division A with minus 13 points, having been docked 20 points for calling off two games.

League secretary Bernard Goulding said: “They have, as you are more than likely aware, been struggling to raise a side all season, and with players’ holidays and other players’ absences from their first and second teams they have reluctantly decided to call it a day with their third team and withdraw from the league.

“We all hope that Sewerby CC can regroup and get a third team, and possibly a fourth team, back again in future years as they had just a couple of years ago.”

Sewerby 3rds resignation means that all points won by teams against them will now be lost.

Filey 2nds will now have a blank Saturday two weeks running as they were due to face them back-to-back over the next two weekends.
