Wally’s Wagers: Female jockeys need a chance

Hayley Turner, the most successful female jockey in British racing history, will quit the sport at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old, who was the first female jockey to ride 100 winners in a year, has become frustrated with the lack of opportunities to ride at the top level.

You only have to look at the top meetings during the season, Ascot, Goodwood, Epsom and in the majority of cases and especially in the Group Ones, you will not find a female jockey in the saddle.

These races are where the money is for jockeys, it’s okay getting three rides at Wolverhampton on a Friday night, but unless you can ride a winner you will struggle to cover your petrol.

Nobody can argue that the Arab owners have had a massive positive influence in horse racing, and you can guarantee that without their ownership the sport just would not survive.

They continue to invest in the sport and invest in the best horses, so therefore normally have a strong hand in any classic race, or Group One.

And in my opinion this is another reason why female jockeys do not get their chance in the big races.

Focusing on this weekend’s racing at Haydock for the Feature race the Betfred Sprint Cup (Group One).

The most difficult prediction is how the ground will run.

Currently the ground is good, if it stays the same on Saturday I can see Adaay running a huge race.

The William Haggas-trained three-year-old is still improving, and ran on very impressively to win the Group Two Hungerford Stakes last time out.

If the ground stays good Adaay should be supported at odds of around 7/1.

If the ground was to go soft, Limato would have to be considered.

Another nice race on the card is the Old Borough Cup handicap at 2.35pm, run over one mile six furlongs.

Satellite and High Secret are the two to keep an eye on.

Satellite is the horse that could still improve going up in distance.

Haggas is having a fantastic season with his four-year-olds and he should give a good account.

High Secret is another who appreciates this type of test and a bold bid can be expected both around 8/1 should not put you off.
