Winner roars in at book awards

BOOKWORMS from a number of Scarborough schools have taken part in an awards ceremony to crown a new novel as their favourite read.

Youngsters in Year Seven and Year Eight from Filey, Graham School, Raincliffe School, Scalby School, Scarborough College and St Augustine's School were involved in the Yorkshire Coast Book Awards, which is a pupil-led project to find the best book.

More than 70 students, including some from Filey School and Eskdale School in Whitby, selected the winner from a shortlist of six books and chose The Roar, by Emma Clayton, as their top read.

The book centres on 12-year-old twins, Mika and Ellie, who are set in a future world and must set off on a journey to find the truth and beat off competition from books including Broken Soup, by Jenny Valentine and Cookie, by Jacqueline Wilson.

The awards, now in their third year, took place at Scarborough College and also featured a talk from author JA Henderson.

Steve Tate, learning resource centre manager at Graham School, said the event had been a great success.

He said: "It was brilliant and was probably the best we have had so far.

"JA Henderson was excellent in speaking to the children and they really took to it."
