A driver fled his burning car after flames suddenly engulfed it in Castle Road.
The road was closed off for around 90 minutes on the morning of Tuesday April 15, after what fire officers have called an “electrical fault” set the vehicle alight.
Dozens of people watched the crew from Scarborough Fire Station tackle the blaze, as police shut the road down in every direction.
The driver of the vehicle told The Scarborough News he had been driving along the road and noticed a smokey smell, although was unsure if it was his car or another.
However, upon turning the corner of Dean Road and Castle Road, he noticed smoke coming from his G-reg vehicle.
He immediately fled the car, leaving it on the road outside of Indian Rose, and the emergency services were called.
“It was really sudden,” he said. “I left my wallet and keys in the car, but I don’t think I’m getting them back.”
A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said nobody was injured in the incident, and the vehicle was removed by a third party before the road was allowed to reopen.
