FRIENDS and family paid respect to Gary Jones at his annual memorial cricket match on Friday at Flixton Cricket Club.
Jones was known as one of the best local batsmen around until he sadly passed away at the age of just 28 in 2009, and his friends and family arranged a memorial cricket match last year to remember him and also to raise money for local charities.
Captains Mick Walmsley and Chris Allen returned this year for a repeat of the action and played out a closely-fought match.
Allen’s side batted first and made 150, with fine knocks coming from Tim Jackson, Gary Ellwood and CAllen, while Martin Scarlett bowled well for Walmsley’s side.
In reply Joel Ramm, Paul Watson and Chris Haldenby batted well, but they couldn’t quite make it to victory.
Needing 16 off the final over, they managed four and fell 12 runs short.
There was an excellent response to the raffle and over £800 was raised for local charities including Mencap and Amelia’s Fund.
